We are a not for profit organization serving the shelter community where newly arrived migrants are temporarily staying. It is located at 640 W Irving Park Road/ 4000 N Marine Drive, the former American Islamic College and long-time Immaculata Girls High School—in the Buena Park community on the north side of Chicago. This shelter is the next step where migrants go after arriving in Chicago.
The migrant families we work closely with have moved into their own residences. While they have very little, they are so happy to be able to cook their own meals. Sleeping in their own bed is very comforting, feeling secure to get enough sleep.
The children are in CPS schools and thriving. We have assisted the families in paying for school uniforms, getting lunchboxes and backpacks.
It started with a Facebook group in July 2023, then the Target Wish List and Amazon Wish List. Things grew from there. Neighbors have been donating clothing, books (in Spanish), shoes, toys and many other supplies. Some items must be purchased new (underwear, socks, bras, etc) but there is so much that can be handed down from others. In September 2023, the group created a not-for-profit.
In November 2023, one of our "adopted" families moved into their own apartment. Soon after, 4 more families moved. By the end of the year, we helped move 14 families from the shelter to their own homes!
This was such a celebration until they realized they have no furniture or household supplies (like sheets, towels, cookware, cleaning supplies, etc). We spent funds donated (GoFundMe) on items like paper towels, remote controls for donated TVs, and moving costs.
We networked & were able to get all kinds of furniture contributions from very generous people.
In 2024, we have helped another six families get settled. So far...
In early 2024, we introduced them to the community where they live, helped with setting up accounts, and search for work.
In February we had our first community gathering at the local library, having a tour by a librarian to show them all that the library offers (!!), had crafts for the kids & taught the moms how to crochet. They have asked to meet monthly to learn more crochet skills.
